New: “AI + WordPress” lessons just dropped — build smarter sites in half the time.

Build Your Email List

Why an email list is an asset you own, how to create a signup offer people want, and how to collect subscribers respectfully.

Social platforms and search rankings can change overnight, but your email list is an audience you can reach directly. It’s one of the most valuable assets a website can build. Let’s start yours today.

Why email matters

  • You own the relationship. You can export your list and take it with you if you switch providers.
  • It’s direct. Your message goes to the inbox, not through a feed algorithm.
  • It builds trust. Regular, helpful emails turn casual visitors into loyal readers and customers.

Choose a provider

Use a dedicated email marketing service rather than sending newsletters from your personal inbox or directly from your web server. These services handle deliverability, unsubscribe links, sign-up forms and list management. Many offer free starter tiers and WordPress plugins or embed codes. Compare current features and pricing, as they change often.

Create an irresistible offer

“Subscribe to my newsletter” rarely excites anyone. Offer something specific and useful:

  • A checklist or cheat sheet
  • A short email course
  • A template, toolkit or resource list
  • Early access or exclusive tips

Then place signup forms where interested readers will see them: at the end of posts, on a dedicated signup page, in your sidebar or footer, and on your About page.

Professor’s warning: Only email people who opted in, and never buy email lists. Include a clear unsubscribe link and your contact details, and follow the rules that apply to you, such as CAN-SPAM in the US and GDPR in the EU. Consider double opt-in to confirm addresses and keep your list clean.

Send something worth opening

Write a short welcome email that delivers your freebie and tells subscribers what to expect. Then keep a steady rhythm, weekly or every other week, sharing tips, new posts and occasional recommendations. Consistency beats frequency.

Your assignment

  1. Pick an email provider and connect a signup form to your site.
  2. Create one simple lead magnet, like a one-page checklist.
  3. Write and schedule your welcome email.
