The Essential Plugin Set

Walk into any plugin directory and it’s like a candy store. Today I’ll hand you a shopping list instead. These are the plugin categories most sites benefit from. Pick one well-reviewed option per category and you’re set.

The must-have categories

• Backups: scheduled, automatic backups stored off your server. (Your host may already provide this; check before adding a plugin.)
• Security: login protection, two-factor authentication and alerts. Some hosts include firewalls and malware scanning.
• SEO: helps with titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps and social previews.
• Forms: a contact form with spam protection.
• Caching and performance: speeds up page delivery. Skip it if your host provides server-level caching and recommends against a plugin.
• Image optimization: compresses images and can serve modern formats like WebP.

Nice-to-haves

• Anti-spam for comments, if comments are open.
• Analytics to see what content resonates (choose a privacy-conscious option and respect local privacy laws).
• Email marketing or signup forms (we’ll build your list in Module 7).
• Redirects to fix broken links when you change URLs.

Avoid overlap

Two plugins doing the same job often clash. Don’t run two SEO plugins, two caching plugins or two security suites at once. Many all-in-one plugins cover several categories, so check what a plugin already includes before adding another.

Keep a plugin log

Keep a simple note listing each plugin, why you installed it and the date. When something breaks months from now, you’ll know exactly what’s running and why. Our plugins page and tools page list our current picks in each category.
