Good morning, class! Today’s lesson is the one every WordPress journey starts with: getting a real site online. The good news? With a modern host and a one-click installer, you can go from “I have an idea” to “I have a live website” in less time than a school lunch break. Grab a coffee, start a timer, and let’s go.

The 20-Minute Time Budget
Here’s the rough schedule we’ll follow. Times are approximate, and your host’s screens may look a little different, but the overall flow is the same everywhere.
- Pick a domain: about 2 minutes (if you already have a name in mind)
- Choose a host: about 4 minutes
- Run the one-click installer: about 3 minutes
- Log in to /wp-admin: about 1 minute
- First settings: about 2 minutes
- Install a theme: about 2 minutes
- Add essential plugins: about 2 minutes
- SSL/HTTPS check: about 1 minute
- Publish your first page: about 2 minutes
That totals roughly 19 minutes, leaving a minute spare for admiring your work. (DNS for a brand-new domain can occasionally take longer to settle, so don’t panic if your address needs a little patience.)
Step 1: Pick a Domain (about 2 minutes)
Your domain is your site’s address, like wordpressprofessor.com. Aim for something short, easy to spell, and easy to say out loud. A .com is still the most familiar choice, but a relevant alternative is fine if it fits your brand.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers that people will mishear.
- Check that the matching social handles are free if that matters to you.
- Many hosts let you register the domain during signup, which keeps everything in one place.
Step 2: Choose a Host with a One-Click Installer (about 4 minutes)
Your host is the computer that stores your site and serves it to visitors. Almost every reputable host today offers a one-click (or automatic) WordPress installer. Hosts generally fall into a few categories:
Shared hosting
Budget-friendly and beginner-oriented. You share server resources with other sites. Examples that offer WordPress installers include Hostinger, Bluehost and SiteGround.
Managed WordPress hosting
The host handles much of the technical upkeep, such as caching, backups and core updates. Kinsta and WP Engine are well-known examples. Usually a step up in cost, with a step up in hand-holding.
Cloud and VPS hosting
More power and control, but more responsibility. Great later; usually not needed for your first site.

Step 3: Run the Installer (about 3 minutes)
- Open your hosting dashboard — look for “WordPress”, “Install WordPress” or “Website builder” options.
- Select your domain — choose the domain you registered or connected.
- Create admin credentials — pick a unique username (not “admin”) and a strong password. Save them in a password manager.
- Click Install — the host creates the database and files for you. Most installs finish within a minute or two.
Warning: Some installers offer to add extra plugins or page builders automatically. If you’re unsure what something does, untick it. You can always add tools later, and a lean start is easier to manage.
Step 4: Log In to /wp-admin (about 1 minute)
Visit yourdomain.com/wp-admin and sign in with the credentials you just created. Welcome to the Dashboard, your new classroom! The left-hand menu holds Posts, Media, Pages, Appearance, Plugins, Users and Settings.
Step 5: First Settings (about 2 minutes)
- Settings → General: set your Site Title, tagline and Timezone (choose a city, so daylight saving is handled automatically).
- Settings → Permalinks: choose Post name for clean, readable URLs, then click Save Changes.

Step 6: Install a Theme (about 2 minutes)
Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme. Your site already includes a default theme (such as Twenty Twenty-Five), which is a perfectly good starting point. If you’d like something different, search the directory, click Install, then Activate. Not sure how to pick? Browse our theme guides.
Step 7: Add Essential Plugins (about 2 minutes)
Head to Plugins → Add New Plugin. For day one, keep it to the essentials: a backup plugin, a security plugin, and an SEO plugin. Resist the urge to install twenty things at once; each plugin is code you’ll need to maintain. Our plugins hub lists the Professor’s recommended starter kit.
While you’re here, visit Plugins → Installed Plugins and delete any pre-installed plugins you don’t plan to use.
Step 8: SSL/HTTPS Check (about 1 minute)
Visit your site and look for the padlock in the browser’s address bar. Most hosts install a free SSL certificate automatically. Then go to Settings → General and confirm that both the WordPress Address and Site Address begin with https://.
Tip: No padlock yet? Look for an “SSL” or “Security” section in your hosting dashboard. Certificates for new domains sometimes need a few minutes to issue, so check back shortly before changing anything.
Step 9: Publish Your First Page (about 2 minutes)
Go to Pages → Add New Page. Give it a title like “About”, type a short paragraph about who you are and what the site will offer, and click Publish. Congratulations, you are officially a WordPress site owner!
While you’re in the Pages list, you can delete the default “Sample Page” too. Tidy classroom, tidy mind.
